I just learned of Helen Kelley’s passing on September 1, 2008, and I feel a profound sense of loss and sadness, as I’m sure thousands of others feel as well. Helen was an amazing woman — a gifted storyteller and quilter — and the world will never be the same without her.
I had the extreme privilege to meet her in person some years ago when she was lecturing at a quilt show in Williamsburg, VA. Her column in QNM had a huge influence on me and when my book was published in 2005, I sent her a copy. She replied with a handwritten note which I cherish dearly and have kept on my desk since that time.
God bless Helen’s family and friends, and especially her husband, Bill, whom we all came to know fondly through her writings. I’m sure she’s off quilting with the angels somewhere stitching with threads of gold!
