Calling all “green” enthusiasts!

Everyone is going “green” these days, and I’m stepping up to do my part. We recycle as much as we can here at home and try to choose products deemed “earth friendly” whenever possible.

Did you ever stop to consider our quilting predecessors from pioneer and Great Depression days were environmentally practical long before it became fashionable and politically correct? They used scraps of fabric from worn-out clothing and feed sacks and made them useful again in colorful quilts to keep their families warm and cover their beds. Now that’s the ultimate in recycling.

These are the only two styles of recycled bags I have managed to collect so far...

These are the only two styles of recycled bags I have managed to collect so far...

Along those lines, I have a fun quilting project in mind but I need your help. Are you familiar with those 100% recycled, pseudo clothlike shopping totes available at your local grocery or discount store for around a dollar or less? Many stores sell — or give away –these reusable bags as alternatives to the plastic and paper bags used at checkout lines. By reusing these bags, it helps alleviate trash at waste collection sites and landfills.

I’d like to collect as many different bags as possible for my project to create something really quilty and cool, and GREEN. Not as in the color green (although green-colored bags are certainly welcomed), but as in environmentally friendly. It doesn’t matter if your bag has writing on it or a store logo; that will only add to the neat design elements in the end project.

If you’d like to help me, I’d appreciate it very much! Please send me a shopping bag (or even a couple of different ones!) made entirely of 100% recycled material from your favorite grocery store or other vendor. The wider variety of colors I can gather, the better! I’ll post some sneak peaks in this blog along the way and give a great big “shout out” to anyone who sends me a bag.

Send them via United States Postal Service (USPS Priority Mail) to:

Kimberly Einmo
CMR 480 Box 1919
APO, AE 09128

The postage will cost you the same amount as if you were sending it to New York. You’ll need a green customs form attached to your envelope or Priority Mail box.

Thanks for your support and help with this project. I look forward to posting it on the blog and my website with complete instructions soon!

Kimberly
